Board of Governers

The Board of Governors is ultimately responsible for the governance of the Institute. It consists of five members, to be announced soon. Director General of AIMS is the ex-officio senior member.

Committees

Committee of Academic Sponsors (CAS)

It consists of representatives from Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), National ICT R&D Fund, National Space Agency of Pakistan (NSAP), National Engineering & Scientific Commission (NESCOM), and Ministry of Science & Technology (MoST). The committee seeks small annual ‘dues’ from these organizations. These funds over time builds up an independent endowment for the Institute's operating budget. Sponsors send their faculty members to participate in the Institute’s programmes to further enhance their professional development.

Committee of Industrial Sponsors (CIS)

A committee of industrialists sponsors researchers and experts from abroad to come to the institute to teach and do research monitored by the International Scientific Advisory Committee.

International Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC)

The International Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC) consists of leading researchers from scientifically developed nations. The Committee is responsible for scientific content of programmes. It selects and evaluates programmes and proposals from the mathematical community.

Joint Committee of AF, PakMS & IPMC

The Joint Committee (JC) comprises six members from three well-established and internationally known fora, namely, Algebra Forum (AF), International Pure Mathematics Conference (IPMC) and Pakistan Mathematical Society (PakMS). The Joint Committee organizes various mathematical programmes.

Purpose

The purpose of the establishment of AIMS is to create a facility which provides a viable environment for mathematicians for high quality teaching and worthwhile research. Its International Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC), which comprises eminent experts from advanced countries, will be monitoring the teaching and research. The Committee shall be responsible for the scientific content of the programmes. It shall preserve the ‘cutting edge’ quality of the programmes, and select and evaluate programmes and proposals from the mathematical community. The Committee shall recommend potential international programme organizers.

AIMS is a means to provide high quality knowledge in mathematical sciences and produce human resource which suits the nation’s requirements. The Institute will stimulate the post-graduate training of mathematicians in the many disciplines concerned in mathematical teaching and research. It will also provide state-of-the-art infrastructure, both geographical and academic, for the production of marketable software as a partial source of income for AIMS.

Motivation

The Institute provides a platform for creating new mathematical knowledge and nurturing mathematicians by exposing rising mathematical talents to the full spectrum of mathematical sciences.

It combats the current lopsidedness in our mathematical research and teaching which is undermining our international standing in mathematics.

It acts as a bridge between academia and government research to collaborate on challenging researches as well as a bridge between industry and government to enable broader public benefit from research.

It helps to bring Pakistani mathematical research and teaching at par with international standards, including establishing variety and heterogeneity in our mathematical research and teaching. It will provide a platform where the quality and relevance to the national needs of science and technology and industry will be achieved through collaboration with various renowned international mathematical societies, academies and centres of excellence.

As a national research centre with close links with international mathematical concerns, it is a credible research centre pursuing mathematical understanding of social and natural phenomena in order to promote and develop mathematical sciences that stress the relationship with society.

Members of PakMS, along with their colleagues, friends, and spouses, are cordially invited. Hi-Tea will be served on a payment basis (Rs. 1,000 per person).

Advance confirmation is required latest by 20 January 2026.

The proceedings of the Seminar and the AGM will also be conducted online.

Programmes

AIMS is an incubator of high class human source. The institute uses its own resources and is a self-earning and self-reliant mathematical hub for Pakistani mathematicians.

Various academic activities such as workshops, seminars, lectures, colloquia and certificate-awarding courses are starting soon. AIMS acquires the services of experts within the country and abroad to offer interesting and useful courses. This programme caters to the needs of students across the country.

Higher Studies

The Institute offers post-graduate one year (two-semester) diploma courses in software engineering. The students from various departments are eligible to register for this course. They will develop soft-wares which will be internationally marketable.

AIMS provides high class supervision to its PhD scholars. The supervisors will be well established foreign and competent national mathematicians.

The Institute organizes schools every year. The principal aim of schools’ programme is to provide training for young researchers in core areas of mathematics. Students meet a number of leading experts in the topic as well as other young researchers working in related areas.

Inauguration

The Advanced Institute of Mathematical Sciences is planning to have its inauguration soon. There will be an opportunity to meet eminent mathematicians, scientists, senior government officials, scholars, senior journalists, industrialists and politicians.

What's New

One of the important features of PakMS is to publish PakMS Quarterly Newsletter (about 20 pages).

In over two decades, the Society has grown considerably. Its structure has grown stronger and has become more viable. For its various features/activities, capable & dedicated volunteers are required.

For the PakMS Quart Newsletter, Managing Editor with aforementioned qualities is needed until 31st Dec 2024 (which is extendable with mutual agreement). S/he will work under the rules, regulations and guidance of the PakMS President.

The 8th PakMS Gold Medal has been awarded to Late Professor Khwaja Masud, on 19th January 2024 in an investiture ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of the Islamabad Club, Islamabad.

Obituary for Kar Ping Shum

Professor Kar Ping Shum (8 June 2023) Prof. Kar Ping Shum PakMS sadly announces passing away of Professor Kar Ping Shum. He was a friend and a great support in many academic matters. His role as an external referee of Pakistani PhD students and his role in supporting the International Pure Mathematics Conference in Islamabad will always be remembered with gratitude.
