Professor Dr. Qaiser Mushtaq

Professor Dr Qaiser Mushtaq Emeritus Professor at Quaid-i-Azam University, was Vice Chancellor of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur (19.12.2014 - 18.12.2018), Vice Chancellor, Ghazi University (01.07.2016 - 17.09.2018), Dera Ghazi Khan and  Vice Chancellor of Government Sadiq Women College University (27.01.2015 - 28.08.2015), Bahawalpur also. He has been an Acting Vice Chancellor (of and on for  3 months), Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. Prof Dr Qaiser Mushtaq has been twice Dean of Faculty of Natural Science, twice Member of the Syndicate, the senior most Professor at Quaid-i-Azam University and an Honorary Full Professor at the Mathematics Division, Institute for Basic Research, Florida, USA.

He did his D.Phil. from the University of Oxford (1983). He has done Post Doctoral research at MIT. He is an internationally known mathematician who has invented a number of new concepts and techniques. He has won several international and national awards: Chowla Medal (1977); Salam Prize (1987); Mathematician of the Year Award (1987) by the NBCP; Gold Medal of Honour (1987) from USA; Mathematician of the Year Award (1990) by the NBCP; M. Raziuddin Siddiqi Gold Medal (1991); 5th Khowarzmi Award (1992) from Iran; Young Scientist of the South Award (1993) from TWAS; 5th National Education Award (1999), National Education Forum, Gold Medal in Mathematics(2000), PAS, and Quaid-i-Azam Gold Medal for Best Performance as a Vice Chancellor in Pakistan, Tehreek-e-Istehqam-e-Pakistan on 25th December 2015.

He has done celebrated work with legends like Professors Graham Higman FRS (Oxford) and Gian-Carlo Rota FNAS (MIT).  He has been an invited speaker at Oxford, MSRI Berkeley, Harvard, and MIT. He was a Royal Commission’s scholar (1980) and a Senior Fulbright Scholar (1990) at MIT; an Associate Member (1991) of ICTP; President of the Mathematical Society of Brunei Darussalam (1994 to 1996), and the Founding President of the Pakistan Mathematical Society. He is an editor and an associate editor of several national and international journals of mathematics and science.

He has authored 137 research papers.  He is the only Pakistani mathematician who has published the highest number of papers in journals, which are amongst 10 mathematical journals rated as the best in the world. .

He has authored/edited 11 books, written many (51) articles on topics in mathematics, education, science and history which are published in national and international newspapers and bulletins. He has supervised 67 M.Phil. and 19 Ph.D. scholars. Professor Mushtaq is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Oxford Society, the London Mathematical Society, the Brunei Darussalam Mathematics Society, and the Punjab Mathematical Society.

He is the Founding President of the Pakistan Mathematical Society (www.pakms.org.pk). The Society is dedicated to supporting and encouraging those involved in research, teaching, and the learning of mathematics at all levels. It was registered with the Government of Pakistan on 26 June 2001. The Pakistan Council of Science & Technology (PCST) has rated it as one of the 10 most active NGO’s of science and technology in Pakistan. It has now reciprocity linkages with Canadian and Australian Mathematical Societies. It is linked also with the International Union of Mathematicians and Southeast Asian Mathematical Society.

He has founded also the well known Algebra Forum (www.algebraforum.org.pk) . It started officially in 2007. It has 64 members and has conducted 210 seminars so far. It has now been cited in Wikipedia and recognized internationally as a viable mathematical non governmental organization of science & technology.

He has been a member of international organizing committees of several international conferences. He is a founding convener of the annual series of International Pure Mathematics Conferences in Pakistan since 2000 (www.pmc.org.pk) . So far he has organized 20 conferences in which 118 foreign speakers, 425  Pakistani speakers and 1077 other participants participated. In 19 years, 118 foreign delegates came from 31 countries including Hong Kong, China, USA, Brazil, India, Turkey, Italy, Japan, Iran, Hungary, Canada, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, France, Yemen, Russia, Australia, UK, Malaysia, Netherlands, Taiwan, Poland, Korea, Estonia, Germany and Vietnam.

Recently he has established an Advanced Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Islamabad (AIMS) (www.aimsciences.org.pk). The institute  uses  its own resources and is a self-earning and self-reliant international mathematical hub for Pakistani mathematicians.
